MAGGIE Q WITHDRAWS FROM PROMO ACTIVITIES MOVIE COMPANY LOSS IS A 6 DIGIT FIGURE

ROTD is coming out in April, recently, the female lead Maggie Q indicated through her manager that she is cancelling her promotional work in the mainland, HK, Taiwan & Korea.

She who had a love affair with Edison Chan is being suspected as one of the 'scandulous pictures' partners. She had once said she was not afraid of the scandal & would be at the various places for movie promo.

But as matter progresses, she gave a sudden announcement that she is cancelling all the promo work. The reason given being she will be in Hollywood for a movie preparatory work.

With this, the movie company faces a loss of 6 digit figure. Mainland movie distributors however refuses to give comment, the spokesman indicated the concerned staff is actively contacting all parties for time allocation, it is not sure if she will ever turn up.

This has raised the credibility of the movie censorship proceedings. HK media reported yesterday that this may affect the release of a few movies, including new movie A Good Father, Andy's ROTD, & a movie dealing with triad .

Wu Shi Yuan indicated because of Lust Caution, not only Tang Wei is being suspended, it will affect the whole movie industry, all the movies which are joint-venture with China are temporarily not approved, filming process is also put to a stop.

Triad movie opened in HK on Feb 28, the director said they have already forgo mainland market during filming as the theme is too sensitive.

As for ROTD, it has been said to be out on the same day for release as HK on Apr 3, but yesterday Polybena indicated that they have never said such a thing, they are not commenting on if it has been affected, they said the progress follows the normal path.

Lu: Was the competition very intense among the 4 Heavenly Kings at that time?

A: Actually there wasn't, just that everyone talked as if there was, I remember we were already very popular then. At the 4 Heavenly King era, I did not know how to dance, later on due to market demand that needed dancing, we learnt. The main song usually needed dancing. The 4 of us had many fans then, we had to dance on TVB Jade Solid Gold programme, but JSG had many other singers. Once we even had a dance segment whereby we danced live. From that day onwards, I told myself I won't want to dance live, not when any other stars were present.

Lu: Why?

A: I just felt so uncomfortable, you have to dance with style, but those people were not your fans, when they saw you they snarl at you, would you still dance? V painful. You¡¯re sure to meet this, I ever saw people who turned their faces away, ever happened, They were not wrong, you can't say they affect you, but if I can produce a good album, what is there to be scared of, not scared.

Some say the history of HK music arena in the 90s was written by the 4 Heavenly Kings, Andy Lau was one of them. Compared to Jacky Cheung who can sing better & Aaron Kwok who can dance better, Andy Lau went through almost the same path as LL, they started with acting & then joined singing. From movie circle they went to the stage, from a popular TV actor to Heavenly King of music world.

Of course there are times when artistes are unhappy & have no freedom, they may have misunderstanding or tiff with the media, there may be time when they throw temper with the media.

Lu: I cannot imagine you throw temper with the media?

A: I can, I remember my first time, should be in 93, I had a fierce quarrel with the media. Very fierce.

Lu: For what?

A: I stayed back in Shanghai for some charity work before I went to BJ for concert. I was supposed to be there one day early initially for a press con. But thinking that I am doing charity for the Chinese people, I stayed back in Shanghai for another day, & postponing the press meet a day later. In BJ, they asked me why I did that, why not I went for the press con, I told them it was a charity activity, they said that was not the reason, I had not given them the respect. I flew into a rage, I did not want to do the press con. Then I went straight for rehearsal. I carried on rehearsing, they kept saying I must have a press con, must have. I was very angry. The organizer also said I must go, so I went.

At the press con what I heard was all scolding words, Andy Lau was such & such, why was Andy Lau like that, why & why, was it we BJ people not comparable to the Shanghainese¡­¡­¡­. I turned mad, at that time, I almost went crazy, I just walked out. After I left, I let those who scolded me to the room, one by one, when they came in I scolded them, who do you think you are, we quarreled for a long time, at the end, one girl was scolded by me until she cried.

Lu: It is not easy to be scolded till crying.

Since that incident, Andy has become friends to some reporters, the quarrel in between occasionally is always due to the different angles each one takes, there bound to have misunderstandings.

As an artiste, said Andy, perhaps he was not thinking so much at that moment, but every misunderstanding brings him nearer to the media. For so many years, he always takes care of those around him, & thinks for others, as he walks th path he gets more & more mature.

The Western movie starring Chow Yin Fat, Michelle Yeoh, initial named as The Bitter Sea was said to be released on the same day as ROTD.

Both movies were slated for screening beginning of next month in HK, HK audience have for years not seen Andy & Chow Yin Fat countering each other head on ! But the date in mainland may have some changes, as since the release of movies Apple (lost In BJ), Lust- Caution, it has set off quite a big repercussions, Tang Wei may also because of this be suspended.

Of late, rumor is rifed that many movies will be re-censored, that means even if the movies were approved previously such as A Good Father, Battle, will be scrutinized seriously again just like a third category film. The officers need time to watch the movies, this will then affect the screening date.

Olympics is drawing near, censorship board is going tighter with movies, it was even said after June no movie will be allowed to be filmed near BJ, while in the other cities, shooting can only start in July.

The government is welcoming Olympics in full force, after April all movie applications will be pushed back to after September for assessment. This measure has spark off a ceasefire to all the HK movies schedule, as most HK movies are a joint venture with China nowadays, they have to be led at the nose by the mainland policy.

Famous HK director Peter Chan admitted that many HK directors who think highly of themselves feel that Andy is but one who serves with one formula, & do not appreciate his acting skill. These people feel that Andy is too common, as common as Mc Donald. Everyone knows that Mc Donald is not something good, but these days who do not eat Mc Donald? 20 years I do not like to eat, but now I always drive to buy the hamburgers.

Andy is like Mongkok in HK, after Mongkok is Tsim Sha Tsui, across the harbor, Wang Ka Wei & Tony Leung are like HK Central.

Andy¡¯s stubbornness is actually his insistence in doing things.

A person can be so stubborn until he does not care what others say, does not bother if other people like it or not, this is indeed difficult.

He continues to set up his own style in the same territory. He sets his path, accepting movies one after another, & gets better each time. He is not working hard, but he has strong perseverance, he uses 20 years to convince those who once doubted or disbelieved him.

A person who has no trust from those around him will get despair easily, but he will not, he use his action to prove himself.

Actually Andy represents a group of movie-goers. Many directors in their younger days could not understand , how can one like this sort of thing (movie)? This is the mistake of the movie, it is not the mistake of Andy Lau. Andy Lay always persists with his own standard, no one can be compared to his standard, with this standard till today you just have to acknowledge it & show your respect. It has become the standard in the entertainment circle.

Many youngsters grow up under Andy Lau standard, the people begin to accept his standard, just like old people like us suddenly realized that all the children likes Mc Donald---you cannot escape & have no escape from the influence it exerted.

Chow Yin Fat's movie ,The Children of Huang Shi, has now been approved & confirmed to be out on Apr 3, the same day as ROTD.

Movie distributors from both sides indicated that they have never expected such a thing can happen, two big movies opening on the same day! But they each have the confidence, cinema lines feel that the 2 movies PK on the same day is now unavoidable, it is now all on Andy & Chow¡¯s popularity.

Some movie industry professional however indicated that Chow¡¯s movie is after all a Hollywood movie, both male & female leads are famous Hollywood stars, it is also a war epic with good visual & audio effect. The director had directed Tomorrow Never Dies, seeming to be more attractive.

Other than HK, Maggie Q has to go to China, TW & Korea, she again asks for a lot of things.

For mainland, most movie promo has to go to different provinces, from BJ to Shanghai, Guangzhou & others, but Maggie Q stipulated that she will go to only one of the places, this gives headache to the local movie company!

For Taiwan, Maggie Q also asked for top class treatment, if her demands were met, the expenditure will hit NT 1 million (about $250,000)

TW movie industry is hitting is downturn, box office is always far from ideal, in addition, Maggie Q is not the important actress, she has no box office guarantee, so the concerned party does not concede to her demands. Also, she said she will not take on Edison Chen, her ex bf, or response to the scandal on the 'suspected explicit photos'! But these are must-ask questions of the reporters, the movie company finds it too difficult to handle!

After discussion, all the movie companies decided not to use Maggie Q for movie promo in Asia, the reporter on this confirmed with the company in HK, who disclosed that M Q will not be in HK for any promo activity, & admitted they cannot meet her demands. Sylvester Stallone has made famous a series of popular action films Rambo, it is still a much talked about movie series, if the role were to be played by a Chinese, who will be the most suitable candidate?

Recently Taiwan movie makers held a poll to pick who is the most ideal Chinese Rambo, action star Jackie Chan beats Jet Li to be the first choice.
